Is mass production of animals morally wrong?

Is torturing and slaughtering animals for our human consumption, scientific research, and testing really necessary?

Some would argue that animals have a "prima facie" right not to be harmed. Depriving the animal of its satisfactions or any other positive experience in the future it may have had is in itself morally wrong. But yet we still slaughter in high numbers. Some would argue its morally right or permissible due to humans needing to consume meat to take in the right amount of proteins and nutrients. But still this is a weak argument for the permissibility of killing animals due to the fact that you can still attain the exact proteins and nutrients from plants. Which we know from our history as well as the consistency in nature. For example the Gorilla one of the strongest Primates on earth that weighs well over 300 pounds are folivores which means their diet consist of plants and leaves. So the argument can be easily discredited.

So who is right in this situation? Is it morally wrong to kill animals especially in mass production? Also could it be permissible or even morally justifiable to do so?
